G20 Summit 2023: Traffic restrictions until September 10; what’s open and closed?

As the stage is set for the G20 Summit, which will take place in Delhi over two days, a prominent gathering of leaders worldwide has arrived to attend this critical conclave. Delhi saw the implementation of strict road traffic regulations on Saturday.

Delhi Traffic Police issued an official statement stating, “Entry of goods vehicles (HGV/MGV/LGV) except engaged in essential services has been restricted in Delhi. All modes of transport, i.e., Buses, TSR/taxis, etc. on Ring Road and road network beyond Ring Road towards the borders are operational as usual and will continue during the summit also.”

Vehicles are not restricted to providing emergency and essential services in the capital. According to ANI, the telephone number (6828400604/112) can be used to help in medical emergencies.

The police also recommend the Mappls app (MapmyIndia) to commuters for alternative routes to their destination. Meanwhile, on September 8, 9, and 10, the Delhi Metro will begin operating at 4 a.m. from terminal stations on all network lines.

S S Yadav, Special Commissioner of Police for Traffic, said, “Essential services such as postal and medical services, and sample collections by pathological labs will be allowed throughout Delhi.”

The entire area within the Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marge) has been designated a “regulated Zone.”

Only authorized vehicles, emergency vehicles, and individuals with travel purposes to the airport, Old Delhi, and New Delhi Railway Stations will be allowed access to the road system extending beyond Ring Road towards the New Delhi district.

After proper verification, vehicles providing housekeeping, catering, and waste management services to hotels, hospitals, and other critical facilities in the New Delhi district are also allowed entry.

The police have been asked to avoid traveling to places within “regulated” or “controlled zones”. It has provided alternative routes if travel is not possible.

From September 8 at midnight until September 10, 11.59 p.m., all types of goods vehicles, trucks, buses, commercial vehicles (including interstate buses, buses of the Delhi Transport Corporation), and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System will be prohibited from plying on the Mathura Road (beyond Ashram Chowk), Bhairon Road, Purana Quila Road and inside Pragati Maidan Tunnel.

Delhi Police has strongly recommended that people stay up-to-date on real-time traffic information using the ‘G-20 Virtual Help Desk’. This resource will provide valuable suggestions for travelers traveling to and from airports, railway stations, and bus terminals during the G20 Summit.

The G20 Leaders Summit is scheduled for September 9-10. More than 30 heads of state and top officials of the European Union, guest countries, and 14 leaders of international organizations are expected to attend the summit.
